Works exactly like the online version but how its worth $5 is beyond me....maybe if it had more value like say a multi stage starter mode. Im not pitching 6 packs of old yeast, I would always do stages in that case...

Since the new update, it isnt calculating starter sizes properly. Its saying I need a 26L starter for 5 gallons of 1.054 wort.
I was just thinking today that I wish Jamil would make an app for his pitching rate calculator and here it is. Excellent tool.
Having this calculator in my phone helps a ton. I can plug in the yeast expiration dates while at the homebrew store and see exactly how many vials or how large a starter I will need.
Very handy to at the shop to figure out how many packs of yeast to buy based on the packaged date, which you dont know til you get there. Thanks Jamil.
Just like the web app but fits in your pocket. Thanks Jamil.
The app is great and easy to use. Just wish there was a version for the iPad so the screen could be better used.
This works perfectly for homebrewing sized batched. I would love to be able to repitch in gallons. I would give it 6 stars if it could help with O2 levels!
For $5 I expected more customization, like maybe beer style adjustments, yeast strain adjustments based on wlp or wy strains. Saw a few people thanked jamil, not sure if its really his app, but this seem more like a money grab for $5 when the calc is free online, and there was room to innovate here. Disappointed in the lack of thought that went into this considering the price
I was not going to buy this app because Jamil has so generously provided a free version of it online for years, and I dont really need the portability (though cdburg makes a good point about using the app to enter yeast expiration dates while at the brew store to calculate packs needed) . Then I saw the whining of a few sourpusses who resent having to pay a few bucks, and who petulantly demand features that are superfluous to the needs of serious brewers who know how to manage yeast. So Im buying this just to support Jamil, who, yes, did personally develop this very useful tool, as he has explained in detail on his site. He has given so much to the homebrew community for free. His podcasts on how to brew each style amount to a university level course (for free), and are a whole lot more fun. His "Brewing to Style" is the text to accompany the podcasts. And if you resent his charging for his and John Palmers book, ..........well, I dont know what to say, other than to encourage others to buy the app, like I did, because its very useful, and worth the price.
Like the mentions below! I agree 100%. Great for on the go calculations at the brew shop to check viability using the dates on the packages.
Use it every brew, thanks jz
Well it does what is says it calculates yeast cells needed in liquid, dry, and repitch. Heres the huge downside for 5 bucks thats all it does there is no wyeast / white labs charts no anything just a straight up yeast calc. I personally feel its very pricey for what it does but in the other hand it does what is supposed ti accurately and thats worth something as well. I guess Ill pray for an update that allows it to do more.
Sorry there is not $5 worth of content in this app. Save your cash and use one of the many free online calculators that are out there.
Although it is nice to have an app that is quickly accessible and customizable vs going to the web, it is fairly plain for the price. If this app had more content from the Mr Malty site just to sweeten the deal for the price, I would feel a lot better about this purchase. I like the previous comment to add the yeast strain info. Hopefully more content will come?
Ya know, I never write reviews but I just had to weigh in here. With all due respect to Jamil and all of his accomplishments as a home brewer, this is the most shoddy excuse for an app that does a simple calculation. And to charge such an amount for a completely simple and terrible interface that obviously no time was spent upon, is highway robbery. Jamil, you should be ashamed of this!!
IT works, but this is way overpriced considering Jamil has his yeast calculator FREE on his website. Not surprised its so much, $5 for this app and $15 for the BCS one... LAME.
If you have learned anything from JZ and BN that has made you a better brewer then this app is very reasonable. It is basic but works great and is nice to have on the iPhone.
This starter calculator is essential to taking your brewing to the next level. Get it, and use it to ensure you are utilizing correct pitching rates (you may be surprised at how much youre under-pitching). We need more apps like this in the App Store, so support the community by buying the app! ;)
No, its not the slickest interface and you can always use the free tool online, but its still worth the cost. I prefer this calculator to others Ive used like BeerAlchemy. Jamils been a huge help to me in my brewing and he literally wrote the book on yeast. I dont mind tossing $5 his way for this very useful tool.
